I Need…

Places

  • From here you can get a whole range of things and it charges it directly to a grant (ask Kristina for the stores code to use). Things you can get here include: lab supplies (tubes, pipettes, tube racks, beakers, etc.), chemicals (ETOH), office supplies (pens, printer paper, sticky notes, etc.), and random other supplies such as dish soap. You can check out what they stock on their website.

If there is something lab work related that they do not stock, or you need large quantities of something that they do stock then a special order can be placed. You will have to fill out this form to place the order. Please ask Kristina if you have any questions or if you need to know which account to charge it to. https://www.uvic.ca/science/stores/special-orders/index.php

  • In this room there are 3 autoclaves and an ice machine. Don't forget to fill out the log book when using the autoclaves

  • Cunningham 202 - Department office where you will find the office staff including Michelle the Grad Student Secretary. This is also where you will get your keys from.

Cunningham 208 - In the mail room attached to the Biology office. You can print from a USB on this machine, scan items, and make copies. Julia's code is 7676

In hallway outside of the Biology office - There is another printer and is the same as the B/W one but has the option to print color.

  • The Grad House is a bar/restaurant (with coffee shop on the side - The Side Project) that is behind the SUB and across from the security office. Common place for drinks on Fridays after seminars. There are no rules that exclude undergrads from this place but generally they do not go here (they go to Felicita’s aka the undergrad bar). It is generally just faculty, staff, and grad students.

This building is also where you will find the GSS office (grad students can get their extended medical insurance card here).

  • This room has replacement waste buckets and spill pads. The code is: 4670

&

Things

  • Science Stores has most office supply needs. This includes printer paper, sticky notes, pens and pencils, and staples. Anything you get from there will be charged directly to a grant. Please check with Kristina for which code to use.

If you need something that stores does not cover then please get in touch with Kristina.

  • There are two printers in the lab for printing B&W. One is located in Petch 114a and the other in the wet lab. There are instructions by the printers and how to connect to them.

If you need color printing or to copy something then you will have to head up to the Biology office mail room (Cunn 208) where there is a copy machine. The copy machine in the hallway outside of the Biology office has the option to print color. Julia’s printer code is 7676.

If you need special printing (printing a poster, business cards, etc.) then check out Blink or Zap Copy.

  • Currently there are two dropboxes with lab ‘stock’ photos and videos. One with Kiritimati Island photos (Kiritimati_Stock_Photos_Videos) and one with photos from local research (BC_research_stock_photos_videos). Please contact Kristina if you do not have access to the one you need.

In both of these dropboxes, most of the photos will have the initials of the person who took the photo in the file name. Please give credit where credit is due. If there are no initials, then credit ‘The Baum Lab’.

When adding photos to these dropboxes then please make an effort to ensure that all photos and videos file names have the date (at least the year), location, and initials of the the photographer. On Macs this can easily be done by selecting a group of photos and right clicking and choosing rename. I prefer to add the ‘rename’ in front of the original file name so that we don’t loose the original file name. Additionally, make sure we have permission to use those photos freely (with credit) before adding to the dropbox. If relevant then add a statement to the dropbox from the photographer stating we can use the photos.

If you are looking for logos from either UVic, partners, or funders then please check out the logo centre page.

  • If you need a lightbulb replace or if there is some other faulty thing (broken switch or outlet) then let Kristina know and she will submit a work request to facilities.

  • If you will be doing lab work in either the ‘wet lab’ or the molecular lab (or another PIs lab) then you will need to complete both the WHIMS and Lab Safety training. You can sign up for them here. You will need to send your completion certificates to Kristina for proper documentation.

If you will be working in another PIs lab then you may need Biosafety training.
